코로나 팬더믹 기간에 호주는 국가를 폐쇄(Lock-down)했다.
오도 가도 못하는 힘겨운 삶이 이어지던 중 눈부신 골드코스트 해변의 서퍼들의 모습이 눈에 띄었다.
누군가를 의식하지 않고 거대한 자연 앞에 자신을 맞닥뜨리는 그들은 순수하게 현재의 순간을 즐기며 자신을 뽐내는 듯한 느낌이 들었다.
“그래. 누구에게나 화려한 순간은 있다. 세상의 주인공은 자신이라는 듯 뜨거운 가슴과 두둑한 베짱이 멋스러웠던 시절 말이야.”
‘라떼는 말이야(Latte is a horse)’를 시전하며 지난 날의 아름다웠던 추억들을 회상하다 보니
문득 과거의 찬란한 시간 뿐만이 아니라 현재를 살아가는 지금의 순간 역시 내 삶에서 가장 소중하고 화려한 순간임을 깨닫게 되었다.
“지금 이 시간에 집중하자! 숨을 깊이 들이마시고, 주변의 아름다움을 감상하며, 가족과 함께 할 수 있는 시간에 감사하자!”
라는 다짐에 새로운 열정을 품게 되는 순간을 경험했다.
‘화려한 날의 서퍼’ 시리즈는 하늘과 바다, 태양과 달, 구름과 바람 등
자연이 만들어내는 풍부한 색감이 서퍼와 어우러지는 다채로운 풍경을 담는다.
기존 직업과 전혀 관련 없는 예상치 못했던 길로 들어서게 되었지만,
인생의 한 페이지를 소소하면서도 즐겁게 채워가며 살고 싶은 마음으로 시리즈를 기획했다.
Artist's Statement:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Australia underwent a national lockdown.
Amid the challenging times of restricted movement, the sight of surfers on the dazzling Gold Coast beach caught my attention.
Facing the vast nature without being conscious of anyone, they seemed to enjoy the present moment purely, exuding a sense of pride.
"Right, everyone has their glorious moments. This glorious moment when I had a passionate heart and was the hero of my own story."
Reflecting on past beautiful memories while reciting 'Back in my days,’
I realised that not only the splendid times of the past but also the present moments are the most precious and splendid in my life.
"Let's focus on the present moment! Breathe deeply, appreciate the beauty around us, and be grateful for the time spent with family!"
With this commitment, I experienced a moment that ignited a new passion.
The series - 'The Surfer on the Splendid Day', captures the diverse landscapes where the rich colours created by nature
- the sky and the sea, the sun and the moon, clouds and the wind - harmonise with surfers.
I didn't expect this adventure into a path that was unrelated to my previous profession in my life;
but I planned this series with a desire to fill a page of life with small and joyful moments.
